Another way for works to enter the public domain is when creators proactively waive their copyrights–they can place works in the public domain before the copyright term is over. Creative Commons has developed the CC0 (read “CC Zero”) Public Domain Dedication tool to allow authors to do this. The CC0 tool is used by authors who want to release all copyrights to their work and fully break down all barriers to downstream reuse.

    <p>Even with tools making it easier for authors to communicate the rights they want attached (or not) to the works they create, we need to support public policy efforts to increase access to the public domain. One such effort is led by the International Communia Association, <a href="http://www.communia-association.org/about-2/">whose mission is</a> “to foster, strengthen and enrich the public domain.” Communia originally developed the <a href="http://publicdomainmanifesto.org/manifesto">Public Domain Manifesto</a> (which you can sign <a href="http://publicdomainmanifesto.org/manifesto#sign">here</a>), and also has generated <a href="http://www.communia-association.org/recommendations-2/">14 policy recommendations</a> that lay out ways that the public domain should be supported through public policy changes and community action. Recommendations include reducing the term of copyright protection overall, making the process of identifying public domain works simpler by harmonizing rules of copyright duration and territoriality, and mandating that digital reproductions of works in the public domain should also belong to the public domain. </p>

    Another way to support the public domain is to highlight and champion community-generated norms. For instance, Creative Commons has been a longtime supporter of the Panton Principles, which advocates that scientific data should be made available in the public domain.

    By open data in science we mean that it is freely available on the public internet permitting any user to download, copy, analyse, re-process, pass them to software or use them for any other purpose without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. To this end data related to published science should be explicitly placed in the public domain.

StatusNet (formerly Laconica[4]) is a FOSS microblogging server written in PHP that implements the OStatus standard for interoperation between installations. While offering functionality similar to Twitter, StatusNet seeks to provide the potential for open, inter-service and distributed communications between microblogging communities. Enterprises and individuals can install and control their own services and data.[5][6]

Version 0.9.0, released March 3, 2010, added support for OStatus, a new distributed update standard superseding OpenMicroBlogging.[7][8]

In December 2012, Evan Prodromou announced "a wind-down" of the status.net hosted service so he could concentrate on a new open source activity stream server, pump.io. Consequently, Identi.ca will also be changed to pump.io. All in the last year before May 1, 2013 active accounts will be migrated.[9] On July 10, 2013 Identi.ca switched over to running pump.io.[10]

June 8, 2013 it was announced StatusNet would be adopted by and renamed GNU social.

Free Social developer and founder, Mikael Nordfeldth and GNU social founder, Matt Lee will co-manage the project. StatusNet founder and Federated Web pioneer Evan Prodromou, will remain active on the project as an advisor and occasional contributor.

This merge represents an ongoing commitment to the GNU social project.

Effective immediately, GNU social now has a highly tested and production-quality codebase, serving millions of social interactions across the federated social web. We plan to continue to develop the software, add new features and plan greater interoperability with existing and future free software social platforms, including pump.io.
