VA RIVERS Russell Fork is a river in Virginia that runs north through Southwest Virginia, Kentucky, and eventually flows into the Big Sandy River The Russell Fork is a 51.9 mile long tributary of the Levisa Fork in southwestern Virginia and southeastern Kentucky. Known for its whitewater, it rises in the Appalachian Mountains in southern Dickenson County in southwest Virginia, and flows north through the town of Haysi, Virginia, the Breaks Interstate Park, and the town of Elkhorn City, Kentucky. Elkhorn City, KY is in Pike County, where the Russell Fork flows into the Levisa Fork, which together with the Tug Fork, form the Big Sandy River. The Russell Fork River below John W. Flannagan Dam in Dickenson County is the largest tail-water trout fishery in southwest Virginia. The cold-water release from the dam provides a unique habitat that is suitable for trout in this 1.6 mile stretch of the Russell Fork River. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Fork http://www.russellfork.info/ Release Season Each October, the Corps of Engineers draws the Flanagan Reservoir down from summer to winter pool. The dam is on the Pound River, approximately 1 mile upstream from its confluence with the Russell at Bartlick. These releases are scheduled over 4 weekends in October providing great whitewater. Standard releases are 800cfs with a high release of 1000cfs on the last weekend.
